Spotlight on coaching: Discovery helps create clarity

Steps 1 & 2: Reflect and Plan

Discover new insights for heart, mind, and spirit.

Reflect, plan, and act in a continuous cycle to understand yourself better, navigate your life journey confidently, and influence your path forward.

Tools for reflection

  • Journaling with or without journaling questions

  • The five-minute journal

  • Talking with an accountability partner

  • Doing different assessments that resonate with you – email me at Marcia.Bertschi@gmail.com for some starting points

Tools for planning

  • Create a one-page plan with goals

  • Create a project charter

  • Create a plan for the next week or two that’s SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound)

Tools for action:

  • Schedule time to work on action items

  • Break work into smaller timeframes - 15 minutes, 30 minutes, or one hour

  • Harness skills from other areas of your life to help you work towards your goals; for example you might be very organized at work and messy at home, what ideas/tasks/etc. from work could you apply to your home setting to get better results?

  • Connect the change you want to make with a well established routine in your life to give the change additional support, for example schedule that activity before or after you walk the dogs

  • Reward yourself as part of doing the activity, for example pay yourself for doing that task, say good job or invite yourself to do something fun. This will establish positive emotional memories as part of doing the activity.

  • To keep and build momentum, use a check-in process

These tools foster intentionality, reflection, and prioritization, helping us navigate the interplay of the various aspects of our lives. Gratitude, reflection, and acceptance can help us realize when our expectations, rather than our actions, lead to dissatisfaction.

“Take the leap, and the net will appear”
Sometimes we lack clear pathways, leading to under-focus and stagnation. Echoing the sentiment expressed above by naturalist John Burroughs, taking the first few steps, even if we can’t see a clear direction, can unstick us and propel us forward.

A key cycle for forward momentum

The reflection-planning-action cycle can help propel us forward by building on our current situations. A one-hour reflection and planning session every two weeks, a key ingredient of the six-month coaching program, can be highly beneficial. These sessions usually include the three aspects of the cycle (reflection, planning, and action) and occasionally focus on something more specific to facilitate your progress.
